Weaver Berit Engen

Recap: 9/2016

September’s meeting featured the work of Berit Engen, a weaver and creator of beautiful, abstract tapestries that have many references to both her Jewish and Norwegian background. Hosted at Columbia College, Berit shared dozens of her works with the group, and described her process, the symbolism of her work, and how her work has evolved.

In Berit’s own words — “My tapestries are woven in a specific time and place, and they are colored by my specific Jewish experience, which is, of course, a tiny and subjective part of the larger Jewish story. In my unfinished, ongoing project, I find inspiration for my weaving in the Jewish religion, history, and culture, and in all that the Jewish experience encompasses.”
